2008 Takahe Cultural Studies Competition
Takahe, with the support of CNZ, is delighted to announce the 2008 Cultural Studies Competition to be judged by Brenda Allen (Auckland) and Rudolf Boelee (Christchurch).
This is an opportunity for students and established writers/commentators to contribute a 'window', a critical reflection of our shared world.
Format (a): Written essay on any topic: minimum 2,000 words (and may include black and white illustrations).
Format (b): Visual arts essay: should include an artist's statement or interview with an artist of approx. 1,000 words and may include four colour images (suitable for reproduction).
Format (c): A portion of creative writing in progress.
Submissions to be typed on A4 paper. Author's name or nom de plume must not appear on the manuscript. Copyright will remain with author. All entries will be considered for publication in Takahe.
Each submission to be accompanied by a nz$5 entry fee, a separate sheet giving author's name and address,and a stamped, addressed envelope for return of results and/or entry/entries. Overseas entrants can either send an International Reply Coupon with their addressed envelope, or add nz$2 to their total entry fee for handling and postage. A single SAE or substitute will suffice for multiple entries.

Wellington Sonnet Competition 2008
Closing Date: 22 September
Sponsored by New Zealand Post.
First prize: $1000; second and third prizes of $500 and $250; $50 for each of ten runners up.
Sonnets must be about Wellington, though you don't have to live there to enter.

This free-to-enter competition is dedicated to Hera/Juno. Entries are to be emailed.
This site has previously held a similar competition with Zeus/Jupiter as the subject, and winning poems can be read on the website.

Sunday Star Times short story competition
The “Sunday Star-Times Short Story Competition” commences on 17 August 2008 and closes on 19 September 2008.
The maximum length of entries is 3000 words.

Heartland 1000, short story competition
The Taumarunui Writers’ Group is celebrating its fifth annual Heartland Short Story competition with the announcement of a one-off special, the Heartland 1000: one thousand words for a $1000 prize.In addition, there is a junior section for those 19 and under, with a $250 prize awarded at the judge’s discretion. Every year of its existence TWG has successfully organised a nationwide short story competition.TWG is pleased to announce that award-winning novelist William Taylor will judge the entries, and would like to acknowledge the assistance of Creative New Zealand.

South Island Writers’ Assoc Short Story Competition
Write a story for young teenagers and win $250! The South Island Writers' Association are pleased to announce their Short Story Competition 2008. The competition is open to all residents of New Zealand, and will be budged by James Norcliffe, poet and writer of young adult fiction. Entry Fee $5.00.
First prize: $250 Second prize: $100. In addition, a number of stories will be Highly Commended.
The story should be aimed at readers between the ages of 12 and 14. The theme is open, and the maximum length is 1,500 words, there is no minimum length.
The closing date is September 30th 2008.

Each year, Takahe magazine runs a competition that alternates between short story and poetry. Takahe is delighted to announce the 2008 Poetry Competition, to be judged by Michael Harlow. The results will be posted online in December 2008 and published in December 2008 issue of Takahe.

The Music Association of Auckland Composition Competition.
The work should be of 4 8 minutes total. Any Instrumental combination of quartet is permitted, but must include at least one traditional Chinese instrument.

Adam International Cello Festival
This biennial festival aim is to promote, recognise and encourage New Zealand and international cellists to attain standards of excellence. Criteria: Cellists who are aged up to 30 years on the 20 July of the year of the competition. Applications are open April/May the year of the competition. First prize is $16,000 plus a recording contract and performance with NZSO.

Gisborne International Music Competition
This annual competition aims to provide an opportunity for young New Zealand musicians to take part in a highly acclaimed competition for players of orchestral instruments. It is open to 16-25 year old solo players of orchestral instruments. Entries close October each year, the competition is held around November/December. First prize is $5000.

Michael Hill International Violin Competition
This biennial competition aims to recognise and encourage excellence and musical artistry, and to promote young violinists who are on the brink of launching their professional solo careers and are aspiring to establish themselves on the world stage. Open to all violinists of all nationalities born after 30 May 1973 and before 30 May 1985. Applications must be received by December of the year prior to competition. First prize includes $40,000 and a CD recording.

Lexus Song Quest
This biennial competition offers the opportunity to compete with the best both in New Zealand and overseas. Winners receive substantial grants towards the cost of study. It is open to singers who are New Zealand citizens and whose main income in the two years prior to the contest was not derived from fulltime professional singing as performers or teachers. Photographic Competition Engineering from an unusual viewpoint
Deadline Monday 1st September 5pm
The photos must have some engineering content or relationship to engineering. The judges are looking for unusual, beautiful and/or thought-provoking images. Photos should not portray engineering or engineers from a negative viewpoint.

Rutherford Science Competition 2008
2008 is a special year for the New Zealand science community:
on December 10th it will be exactly 100 years since Ernest
Rutherford was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his
investigations into the disintegration of the elements, and the
chemistry of radioactive substances.
The University of Canterbury and the Royal Society of New Zealand
will mark the occasion with a national schools competition.
To cater for all age groups the competition will be divided into three
categories: Year 9-13, Year 5-8 and Years 1-4. Topics and the rules
of the competition are available at University of Canterbury Outreach website.
For Years 9-13 students will be required to write an essay. Essay
topics and the rules of the competition are available at the University
of Canterbury Outreach website. The closing date for this age group
is 31st July 2008.
For Years 1-8 the competitions will be launched in August and run
through terms 3 and 4. More resources will be made available to
schools later in the year. The students will be required to write stories
or make posters, based on the life and work of Ernest Rutherford.
For Years 5-8 Entries can be an essay (maximum word count: 600)
or a poster (maximum size: A3)
Closing date is 31st October 2008.
