RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds
Have you ever noticed the little symbol and wondered what it does and how you can use it to your benefit?
That little symbol lets you know there is a RSS feed attached to the web page you are viewing. RSS is a web feed format that is used to publish frequently updated content, things such as blog entries, new headlines and podcasts. An RSS document (which is called a "feed" or "web feed") contains a summary of content from a web site. RSS makes it possible for you to keep up to date with web sites in an automated manner without needing to visit each site individually.
Method one for Internet Explorer 7
If you have Internet Explorer 7 (download Internet Explorer 7 for free) you will have the ability to save RSS feeds straight into your Favorites Center . When you are on a site that has RSS feeds it will either have the RSS symbol on the page or the one at the top of your screen (on the same line as your tabbed browsing and Favorites) will be orange.
Please note that subscribing to feeds as in Method one will mean you can only access the feeds from the one computer. To be able to access them from any internet connected computer you will need to use Method two.
Here is an example using Yahoo!7 News.
Go to http://nz.yahoo.com/
Click on the on your navigation panel (the same bar as your tabbed browsing and Favorites) and a new page will come up with :

The first line Yahoo!Xtra News Top Stories tells you which feed you are viewing. Below this yellow box is the headlines and a summary of the Top Stories.
You will notice there are stories from NZPA and Newstalk ZB if you click on a story by NZPA you can then click the RSS symbol you can then subscribe to NZPA feeds only.
Click on ‘Subscribe to this feed’.
- You can change the name and put it in a folder if you wish.
Click ‘Subscribe’.
Now you can quickly view the latest news from NZPA easily and quickly from one page.
If you want to see the latest feeds from NZPA just go to your ‘Favorites Center ’, click on ‘ Feeds’ and then click on the feed you wish to view.
This will bring up the latest news headlines with a small summary, click on a headline to read the entire story.
The above can also be done with blogs (the word is a truncation of web-log). A blog is essentially a web page with regular 'posts' that are arranged chronologically.
Lets try subscribing to a Blog RSS feed.
Go to http://cclblog.wordpress.com/ (this is the Christchurch City Libraries blog)
You will see to the right of the screen the RSS feed symbol - - click on it
You will see that this is just the same as the Yahoo!Xtra site, except now the feeds title is Christchurch City Libraries Blog.
Click on ‘Subscribe to this feed’
Click ‘Subscribe’.
Isn’t it easy! It’s a fantastic way to keep up-to-date with some of your favourite things.
Option two for older versions of Internet Explorer
If you have an earlier version of Internet Explorer (one without tabbed browsing) you will need to put your RSS feeds into an online tool called a newsreader. There are many you can use but we will look at just one of these Bloglines.
If you go to www.bloglines.com and click on ‘Sign up now! Its Free!’ you will need an email address to do this.
Fill out the form.
You are now ready to add feeds to your Bloglines account.
Lets add Yahoo! Extra News:
Go to http://nz.yahoo.com/
The index for Yahoo! is on the left hand side, for this example click on ‘News’.
You will see at the top of the page on the left-hand side it says ‘News via RSS’, click on this.
The next page tells you about RSS and there is a list of RSS feeds available. Click on ‘Top Stories RSS’.
Now select the address in the address bar (put your mouse pointer at the beginning of the address hold down the left button and drag the pointer over the entire address and then release the button), right click on the selected address and copy it.
Go back to your Bloglines account
On the Bloglines home page click the ‘Feeds’ tab (located just under where it says ‘Bloglines’)
Now your page will be split in two.
Click ‘add’ on the left side.
On the right hand side it will say ‘Blog or Feed URL’ with a white box next to it, right-click in the box and click paste. The address you copied should appear in the box.
Click ‘Subscribe’. A set of options will display, you may change these if you wish or just click ‘subscribe’ at the bottom.
You are now subscribed to Yahoo!Xtra News -Top Stories
To access this list just go to any internet connected computer and go to www.bloglines.com and login with your login details, click on ‘feeds’, read the summaries in the right-hand side of the page and click on the headline you want to read the whole story.
Please Note that not all sites have RSS feeds.
Now you have the basic skills to play around with RSS feeds and as you do more of this you will find ways of organizing your feeds and other feeds you can subscribe to.
