e-books are coming to our libraries
On Wednesday 14th December Greytown Library will host an e-book showcase from 10 to 11.30.
This is a free public seminar showcasing ebooks and ereaders which is travelling around the lower north island. The focus on how to access them, how to download and navigate them.
Anyone can come and play with a range of devices and see how easy it is to borrow ebooks.
The roadshow/showcase is a pilot for the one which will be happening nationwide from February 2012. So our region is first off the mark.
The regional libraries are being sponsored to provide this roadshow by a range of companies and organisations. Approximately 45 public libraries throughout New Zealand are going live with ebooks within the next three months.
The participating libraries are offering a range of ebooks and e-audiobooks for library customers to borrow free of charge.
The behind the scenes technology that manages the issues and returns of the ebooks/e-audiobooks is from a company called Overdrive. Overdrive is the world’s largest supplier of ebooks via public libraries, with some 11,000 libraries worldwide delivering ebooks via this model. Overdrive negotiates with publishers to ensure that libraries are able to offer ebooks/e-audiobooks to customers.
