Criteria: Keeping it real
Poems must have relevance to Matariki – Maori New Year, they must be original.  One poet per poem, one poem per round.  Poems must not exceed 3 minutes.  Come prepared with 3 poems – 2 rounds and a 3rd if there is a tie breaker.  Poems in another language must have an English version.  No props, instruments or costumes.  Judges decision is final.  Apply by 15th June.

Landfall Essay Competition
The purpose of the competition remains as it was at the outset: to encourage New Zealand writers to think aloud about New Zealand culture, and to revive and sustain the tradition of vivid, contentious and creative essay writing in this country - as embodied in the non-fiction of early Landfall contributors such as Bill Pearson, in the essays of past winners of this competition, and in the essays the journal continues to publish.
Entries for the sixth Landfall Essay Competition will be accepted from 1 May 2008. The closing date for receipt of entries is 5 pm, Thursday 12 June 2008. The winning entry will be published in the November 2008 issue.
The winner will receive $2500 and a year's subscription to Landfall. Manuscripts should be supplied in hard and soft copies, with text saved as RTF, MS Word or text-only files on a CD. Email entries will not be accepted/ Two hard copies of manuscripts are required. These should be typed with double-line spacing and a wide left-hand margin. The name, address and telephone number of the author should appear on a separate sheet of the manuscript. This biennial festival aim is to promote, recognise and encourage New Zealand and international cellists to attain standards of excellence. Criteria: Cellists who are aged up to 30 years on the 20 July of the year of the competition.  Applications are open April/May the year of the competition.  First prize is $16,000 plus a recording contract and performance with NZSO.

Gisborne International Music Competition
This annual competition aims to provide an opportunity for young New Zealand musicians to take part in a highly acclaimed competition for players of orchestral instruments.  It is open to 16-25 year old solo players of orchestral instruments.  Entries close October each year, the competition is held around November/December.  First prize is $5000.

Michael Hill International Violin Competition
This biennial competition aims to recognise and encourage excellence and musical artistry, and to promote young violinists who are on the brink of launching their professional solo careers and are aspiring to establish themselves on the world stage.  Open to all violinists of all nationalities born after 30 May 1973 and before 30 May 1985.  Applications must be received by December of the year prior to competition.  First prize includes $40,000 and a CD recording.

Lexus Song Quest
This biennial competition offers the opportunity to compete with the best both in New Zealand and overseas. Winners receive substantial grants towards the cost of study.  It is open to singers who are New Zealand citizens and whose main income in the two years prior to the contest was not derived from fulltime professional singing as performers or teachers.  The next competition is in 2009.  First prize $10,000 and $15,000 scholarship.  Apply September 2008.

CUT TO: Music
The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra is offering filmmakers from across New Zealand a rare and exciting opportunity to watch their film screened to a packed Aotea Centre with live orchestral accompaniment.  CUT TO: MUSIC is a short film competition challenging film-makers to write, direct, and edit an original work based on a film score commissioned especially by the APO, which can be downloaded from the orchestra’s website.  The winning contestant receives a prize and their film will be screened as part of the orchestra’s concert of film music: Return of A Night at the Movies, accompanied by a live performance of the score by the APO.
Open to all film makers – students, amateur-directors and industry professionals alike – directors are encouraged let their creativity run free while they tell a story, all the while ensuring that sound is married to image.
Competition entries are now accepted by the APO. Contestants may submit as many films as they choose. Entry forms must be submitted to the APO by Friday 16 May. Finished films must be handed in to the APO by 5pm on Monday, 2 June.

Junk to Green Funk art competition
This competition draws a link between low-impact environmental production (such as the artworks you make) and fair trade craft and food (such as our producer partners make), this theme will also feature at our Art Auction for World Environment Day in Wellington.
The artwork you create will be made from recycled materials. It will be an object with a low “carbon footprint” and has a useful and/or aesthetic aspect to it. The competition runs through Fair Trade Fortnight and culminates on World Environment Day - June 5.

NZ School’s Photographic Competition
This competition is being facilitated by the New Zealand School’s Visual Arts Charitable Trust, a non-profit organisation that has been set up for purposes such as this competition.
This photographic competition has been running for New Zealand students for the past 3 years and every year is more exciting and more popular than the last. We look forward to receiving entries for this years theme ‘Our People At Work & Play’ or the Agresearch Science Section 'The Science of Farming'.
Entries are due by the 25th July 2008. The Awards Ceremony will be held at the Concert Chamber, The Academy of Performing Arts, University of Waikato, Hamilton on 22nd August 2008.

The New Zealand Writers Guild and  Nga Aho Whakaari present - The Final Draft Short Film Script Competition

2008 Pacific rim international print exhibition
The exhibition is open to artists 18 years and older from cultures of the Pacific Rim, the basin of the Pacific Ocean, and the US and its territories.
Eligible printmaking media are intaglio, lithography, relief, serigraphy, digital computer prints, and mono prints. The work must have been conpleted in the last three years
Preliminary selection through review of slides or images supplied on CD. Entry fee of $40, and documentation due on 9 June 2008.
All selected works should arrive by 4 August, 2008. The Exhibition opens 6 October at Sofa Gallery, The Arts Centre of Christchurch.

Rutherford Science Competition 2008
2008 is a special year for the New Zealand science community:
on December 10th it will be exactly 100 years since Ernest
Rutherford was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his
investigations into the disintegration of the elements, and the
chemistry of radioactive substances.
The University of Canterbury and the Royal Society of New Zealand
will mark the occasion with a national schools competition.
To cater for all age groups the competition will be divided into three
categories: Year 9-13, Year 5-8 and Years 1-4. Topics and the rules
of the competition are available at University of Canterbury Outreach website.
For Years 9-13 students will be required to write an essay. Essay
topics and the rules of the competition are available at the University
of Canterbury Outreach website. The closing date for this age group
is 31st July 2008.
For Years 1-8 the competitions will be launched in August and run
through terms 3 and 4. More resources will be made available to
schools later in the year. The students will be required to write stories
or make posters, based on the life and work of Ernest Rutherford.

or a poster (maximum size: A3)
