StoryWalk®

A StoryWalk® is an outdoor reading activity that allows children, families, and people of all ages to read a story while walking along a nature trail. Pages from a children's book are printed and strategically placed along a designated route, creating an interactive reading experience for individuals of all ages.

Where is our StoryWalk®?

Located in Martinborough, the StoryWalk® starts at the top of Considine Park (on the corner of Kitchener and Princess Streets) and winds through to the Vintner Lane exit. View map.

It's a fabulous way to enjoy a children's story while walking, hopping, skipping or jumping along the path. The walk takes 15-20 mins and is the perfect addition to a family picnic or children's birthday celebration.

The stories change throughout the year, so this is an activity to return to.
Perfect for ages 3-8 and the young at heart.

Free and available at any time with no bookings required.

The Eels of ANZAC Bridge

Written by Ali Foster

Illustrated by Viv Walker

Published by Fraser Books Publishing

It can be difficult to explain the significance of Anzac Day to children.  For a gentle introduction read The Eels of ANZAC Bridge now on the StoryWalk® in Considine Park, Martinborough.

This thoughtful story (written by Ali Foster and illustrated by Viv Walker) also promotes an understanding of conservation by highlighting the life cycle of the tuna kuwharuwharu (longfin eels).  Thank you to Diane and Ian Grant from Fraser Books for permission to share this story which has so many connections to the Wairarapa.

"A delightfully told and illustrated story that interweaves the story of eels migrating across the ocean from a New Zealand river near an historic bridge north of Masterton commemorating the soldiers who lost their lives when they also travelled thousands of miles to fight in the Great War. The story is based loosely on the life of a young boy who grew up near the river and with the eels and then lost his life on the Western Front during the First World War. Eels of Anzac Bridge has been reprinted four times to date." (Publisher's blurb)

If you'd like to learn more about tuna kuwharukuwharu, this booklet by Joseph Potangaroa is full of information.

History of A StoryWalk®

The StoryWalk® project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont, in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. The concept was inspired by Anne's desire to combine her love of books with her passion for nature and outdoor recreation. Since its inception in 2007, A StoryWalk® has grown in popularity and has been adopted by libraries, schools, parks, and communities around the world.
